VDAY: All that hype and denial

Today is Valentines day.

There was a flurry of activity in the office today. Every so often you would hear a chorus of wows and then a couple of gushes. Then some jeers that sounded like they were directed at someone else.

I was wearing a killer all black getup today. On any other day, it would be considered normal. But today, every single person I encountered asked me – “Why are you wearing black today, valentines pa naman?”.

My friend (who’s hubby is in the US) and I were talking about how so many of the general public fool themselves into thinking Valentines day does not mean anything to them. As the day nears, you would here people say…

“Di kami lalabas on the day itself. Corny eh!”

“Bakit sa Feb 14 lang ba dapat magpadala ng rose? Dapat everyday nga e”

“For us, everyday is valentines day”

But regardless of how many contradictions you hear coming out of people’s mouths, you will also witness how these same people suddenly become forlorn when they dont get flowers and jealous of those who do. And why do people prepare themselves for the heavy traffic that they are sure they will get stuck in. Or how come restaurants (and motels – ssshhh) get all booked up during VDay. Why do employees rush home earlier than usual on what is believed to be a special day?

Like me, everyone should just admit that deep inside, we crave for the flowers that we hope to receive… or the goodnight kiss we hope to get as we take our date out to a very expensive romantic dinner… or believing that there must be something waiting for us at home even when the whole day has gone by with nothing to show for it.

Do you realize that Valentines gives people an excuse? An excuse to give flowers… an excuse to expect flowers… an excuse to bring out your best suit… or wear your new dress… an excuse to eat out… stay out… party… an excuse to kiss… hug.. make love…

So cmon, admit it… youre all suckers for Valentines.

Me? Im not. I just happen to come home early because I felt like it… ;)

so true :( even if you claim to be a sooo independent woman — even if you say craps like “you don’t need a man to complete you” — at the end of the day, sabi nga sa Grey’s, you still want “your knight-in-shining-whatever” to be at your side (:

    sigh… :(
