The most surprising upset on American Idol
In what appears to be the most surprising upset of the TV series, America has voted… and Melinda Doolittle says goodbye to American Idol.
Melinda has consistently stayed at the top singing better and better as the episodes rolled on. Her performances have managed to melt even cold-hearted and critical Simon Powell’s heart. Gushing like a lovesick boyfriend, Simon would speak out compliment after compliment after each and every performance of Melinda. Makes you wonder, eh?
I was really expecting Blake or Jordin to get voted off as I wasn’t very much impressed with Blake (but that’s me) and Jordin had some blah performance this week. Before Melinda’s name was called, my yaya predicted the outcome. I laughed it off. But my husband actually had the last laugh, with matching guffaw and finger-pointing in my direction – as he on the other hand predicted that Melinda will be the one to say goodbye.
He says that the reason Melinda was voted off was because she had just one voice – one type of voice for lack of a better description. Whereas Blake could do funny things with his tongue, tonsil and diaphragm and Jordin had quite a big captivating character. My thoughts on the other hand was that Melinda just did not pass America’s standard of idol beauty. Wouldn’t you agree? No worries. I am confident she will still reach the top. Dont you think?

I don’t think it was an upset. Although Melinda is a great singer and has been consistent on every round, none of performances were what AI viewers call a “Summertime” moment.
The judges and the producers were actually pimping Jordin to win by harsh criticism to fuel sympathy votes. Not that I adore her though (I’m rooting for Blake on this one).
@empress maruja
- My husband is rooting for Blake too. I think he was awed by the bee-bop he did in a few of his performances.
naaahhh, i was not ‘awed’… just surprised that he had the guts to do that ‘be-bop’ singing-voice in AI… just new, that is…
Hi Apples!
While I do like Melinda, I don’t think the future bodes too well for her. The road to pop success and platinum record sales is littered with the careers of oh-so-talented artists whose look just wasn’t what America was looking for. How does one market the big-boned divas like Martha Wash, Mandisa, or Mau Marcelo? What does a record label do with a black, gay singer like Billy Porter or Anwar Robinson? For every Clay Aiken, you have a Tamyra Gray.
I would love to be proven wrong, sis, but it doesn’t look good for Melinda. She will have a good life, though, singing backup, most likely, and reliving this experience, which may well have been one of the best in her life.
Maruja: I humbly think Melinda did have a “Summertime” moment with “My Funny Valentine.” That initial performance got America to remember her, and helped her set the bar by which performances in Season 6 were judged.
@ganns
- Eiya! Havent seen you around in a while. Its too bad if a backup singer is all Melinda will ever be. I would like to think the world is ready to open their arms to someone like a Melinda. And at one time America did with Taylor Hicks. However, his career is slowly being flushed down the drain. Of all the AI’s I think America did well with Carrie Underwood. She’s definitely lived up to the definition.
Sanjaya should have won this season for sheer entertainment value!
Now we’re left with a non-singer and the daughter of Hagrid. Boring season. : |
@benj
- Im starting to agree with you there. I just wish Jordin wins regardless of the relationship to the Hagrid family. I dont think Blake is AI material. Taylor Hicks is tons better than he is and Taylor is flopping the charts.
