High school reunion
A while ago I watched an episode of Yes, Dear and there, Kim, Christine and Jimmy (with Greg) go back to the past by attending their high school reunion. And with all high school reunions, there comes with it the personalities that at one time or another has touched or tormented our hearts and lives.
Some of the personalities they featured in the show were: the coolest guy in class, the dirty old groping teacher, the wannabes (Greg), and the salivating guy who has been forever in love with you.
It made me remember my own high school reunion… oh I never got to go. LOL. It still made me reminisce about my own life as a high school teenager.
I wasn’t unaware of my high school reunion. I get regular updates from my friends. I just chose not to attend. And when I say high school reunion here, it means those alumni events that are not really specific to a batch year but applies more to all alumni. We also had one that was organized by our batch which was timed to be at our 10 year anniversary. I did not attend that either. Nor did I hunger for post parteeh tidbits like I would normally do.
My high school was not unextraordinary. It was in fact eventful. I can remember a life full of fun, laughter, squeals, romance, academics, trips, friends, and tears. If you would ask my batchmates to classify me, they would probably say… insignificant… more academic than party animal.
My parents were very strict and demanding when it came to my studies and they made sure that I did not mess up. That means, no sleepovers, no parties. And that basically killed my social life. But that did not stop me from having a life. I have a tight group of friends that I still see regularly every year (ex. Christmas). I also had close friends from other groups in our batch. These were people I get to talk to regularly say, every morning before the bell rings for class, but don’t hang out with as they have their own circle to be with.
Like all high schools, there are the usual tormentors. In our school, these were the bullies. I used to think bullies never existed in all-girl schools. I was wrong. Bullies come in all shapes and sizes. They were the girls that were stronger, louder, prettier or richer than normal students. Nobody was spared from their bullying. I saw how other strong, loud, pretty, rich girls succumbed to the aggressiveness of these girls. Imagine what it felt like for those who were just normally cruising along. I vaguely recall one episode when a group of these bullies took my chips during recess.
If I really think about it, my high school memories do not make me go “awww”. Maybe that is why I do not have this strong desire to go back and relive those years. Once I left, I stopped looking back.

I’m pretty much very average in highschool and like you never a party animal. I also don’t have a school related extracurricular activity (I did serious study piano though and this is enough reason for me not to go out after class - but no one at school knows this except my close friends) thus I was never popular. I somehow even think that most of my batchmates don’t rember that I existed.
But I don’t care much because I found in highschool really GREAT FRIENDS. Friends like me and who can laugh with me whenever we talk about things like we’re such “losers” in highschool. We knew even before that we’re more of the average but popularity was never an issue to us. We were not on the top of our class but we were serious with our studies. Aside from that puro clean fun lang rin. This makes me proud na rin in a way.
Hopefully, we will be able to stay close pa rin kahit na magkaroon na ng family in the future. I also got nostalgic..haha
cathy - That’s more or less what I felt about my high school too. I bet that most of my batchmates can probably say hi and hello to me in case we come to cross paths today but its not like “aaapppleeessss!!!!” in a shrieking tone that is most often depicted on tv - if you can imagine what i mean. Im sure you and youre friends remain close until you all settle down. My friends and I do not see each other regularly - maybe once or twice a year but if we do get together… its as if we just saw each other yesterday.
I guess that just comes with great friendships.
