Are you afraid to use tampons?

There are only 2 radio programs I listen to when I drive to and from work. Mornings are dedicated to Good times with Mo, Mojo and Grace Lee. Evenings are reserved for my favorite threesome, Boys Night Out. And I don’t think I am alone judging by the volume of listeners to both programs and of course by how difficult it is to get a phone call through (or so I heard). The reason being that their discussions are often amusing and the topics range from interesting to extremely interesting. Listening to them serves me well especially if I have to endure bad traffic conditions in the metro.

Many times I would have loved to jump in and join in the discussion but that entailed dialing their hotline again and again since the line is expected to be busy. I heard one listener of Goodtimes say it took him more than a year of calling before he actually got to talk to Mo!

So the topic was about tampons and how there seems to be very few people in the country who actually use them. They asked out loud why that is and the conclusion appeared to agree with something Grace expressed that women may feel awkward about the inserting something “there”. Sort of like having sex, if you know what I mean (wink!).

I think differently. I think the reason why it doesn’t seem popular here is more because very few stores sell them. You would have to go through every PX store just so you could buy them and it would even cost you your week’s allowance (or more).

I use tampons and I stock up on them for fear that my favorite supermarket will stop selling them. Given that, I must say I am actually a late bloomer in the use of tampons. I was introduced to it by a fellow sports buff who encouraged me to try it promising its benefits especially when playing badminton. Once I did, I got hooked and suddenly a lot of people I know seemed to be using it and longer than I had expected it.

So if women here just realize how much easier it would be to live through their period when using tampons, I’ll bet there will be a huge demand for it. Imagine still being able to wear your favorite thong, or lace undies even when you have your period. Imagine not having to worry about spills and stains. Imagine not having to worry about not being able to walk fast, run or dance. All of those things you complain about each month would no longer be an issue. And if women are afraid of getting TSS, then I suggest read the instructions on how to use tampons properly.

Are we not looking for the answers to make our lives easier? Well then tampons certainly is one of those answers. Go on try it!

i have a question. how often do you have to change it in a day? is it like changing napkins every so often?

  2. |

rors – The frequency depends on what type of tampon you are using – i.e. regular, super, super plus etc. Those pertain to how heavy your flow is. For me though, I replace tampons after about 4 hours during heavy days and 6 hours during light or regular days. The maximum time you should leave a tampon on is 8 hours. Since it is easy to forget you have your period when you are wearing tampons, I make sure I take note of the time I change or put a new one in so that I know when I need to take it out.

    where can i buy it?

  5. |

Tina – I buy my stock at the Market Market grocery or sometimes at Rustans. There’s also a PX store in Glorietta that sells them but I cant remember the name.

yikes, im so old fashioned pala.

actually, i remember buying tampons right after college, coz back then, id wear thongs everyday. sobrang nahirapan pa ko maghanap, tapos hindi ko rin ginamit. i think it was in my closet for 3 years, and then finally remembered to throw them. i was just so afraid of TSS. nakita ko na lang bigla sa box, and you know how much of a scared idiot i can be sometimes. now, aside from the fact that they don’t sell tampons in your nearest grocery store, im just always scared it would get stuck there and id have to have an operation to have it removed. que horror!

and im also in cebu. heh. i wanna try using it.

btw, i really enjoyed reading your blog. =)
is it ok if i include u in my blogroll?

shine – You are not old fashioned if you were the first among us who actually tried this. I cant blame you for being scared. There’s just too much urban legend going around that its not possible not to be scared. :)

joan – I am not familiar with shops or stores in Cebu but if there are PX stores in your area, they should have some tampons for sale.

And thanks for the compliment and feel free to link! Cheers!

Is it okay to wear tampons while swimming?

  11. |

Amy – Yes its ok to wear tampons while swimming. Its actually one of the reasons I was encouraged to try it. I have been able to enjoy swimming even when I have my period because I use tampons.

Hi. I just come across your blog searching some recipes and then I find this very interesting post. Actually i’ve really considered using tampons because I’m starting to get serious allergies using napkins. Though I’m afraid, I still consider the idea of trying it. However while searching online, I found a totally different and “freakingly” new option. Have you guys ever heard of a mooncup? Well out of what I’d rather say a feminine instinct, I bought one online. When i got mine, it was shipped from UK, i saw the cup and i thought I can’t just put that in there! But i did still try it. I’m planning to write a post about this on my blog however, I just used it the first time and will wait til next month and see if i’ll have the courage to wear it again. It was a very different feeling. It’s like a tampon however, instead of absorbing it collects our monthly outpouring. I think it’s not for everyone though. I’ll create a post about this once I got the time. :)

Myke – I heard about the moon cup but have not seen it sold anywhere here so I really cannot say what it looks like or how to use it especially if it works. If I do see one, I probably would be interested enough to buy it.

I haven’t seen a tampon in my whole entire life.

    Mon – I don’t think you’re missing anything. ;)

[...] was so sick last week that I forgot to stock on tampons so when my monthly period came, I had to make do with whatever the neighborhood store was selling. [...]

Do you think it’s ok for me to use tampons immediately If I’m used to pads?

  18. |

    ladyAnne – of course!

Hi! I’m 13 and I’m using kotex pads. I would saw my flow isn’t very heavy, maybe on a scale of 1 to 4, 4 being extremely heavy, it’s be a 2. So, it’s not like feather light, but it’s not enough to really bleed through even a pantyliner (even if I leave it on for 3 hours, I suppose). I’ve been invited to a hotel with a pool for the weekend, and my grandma already made reservations, in hope that my brother and I would really want to swim. I told her three days ago I didn’t have my period (I haven’t gotten it for MONTHS! So irregular..) It sucks. I can’t swim. I’m so afraid to use a tampon – afraid of getting blood on my fingers, afraid of tearing something, afraid of not being able to get it out, afraid of blood in general. I also know I’m going to miss. Can someone sort of give me step by step instructions?

Gabbi – It would be intimidating to be trying on a tampon for the first time. I recommend you buy the tampax brand because they have those types that are for light flows so the tampon is very thin. Its indicated by the color purple in the box. Tampax have long strings and these are very strong so unless you cut it, I dont think it will tear easily. I cannot guarantee though that you will not get blood on your hands but its your blood and you can always wash your hands 10x after to erase any memory of it. The tampax brand also has a step by step easy to follow instructions. I will try to post the instructions on the leaflet when I get the chance. Good luck!
