Blame the Brazilians

The bikini was invented by the French but apparently the string bikini was revolutionalized by Brazilian model Rose de Primo. The reason being the lack of a proper bikini to wear to a photo shoot.

Now in order to successfully “wear” the string bikini, one must accompany it with… you guessed it! A brazilian wax! So goes the history of the brazilian and ever since, women have relegated themselves to a lifelong torture where hot sugar wax and cloth strips are used to pull out the stubborn skin to produce smooth and silky bikini lines.

A lot of women, especially Filipino women, are normally apprehensive about getting a brazilian. I know a lot who would bravely try and get a bikini wax but chicken out when faced with the idea of going totally bare. Maybe its because of all the urban legend surrounding it? I mean who would be encouraged to try it when all you read about and hear about is on how much painful it is? Really! Some even compared it to childbirth and childbirth won hands-down. Duh! I say - what a crock! A lot of women say giving birth hurts a lot but there’s no evidence of women ever slowing down (on giving birth that is).

So I am here to enlighten you and maybe encourage you to go through what I feel is one best things that ever came from this exotic country in South America.

When getting a brazilian wax, you must first choose where to get it. So go out and read, visit, ask, inquire, research and confirm until you are absolutely comfortable about the place that you have chosen. To name some: your local salon - Piandre, Basement Salon, Tony and Guy, Fix by Bench etc. There are also waxing services at your neighborhood spas: Suriya, California Nails, Institut Clarins. And the best of the lot would be those that earn their income on waxing services: Lay Bare, Brazilian Bare.

After choosing where to get waxed (and of course when), you then prepare yourself. And I dont mean emotionally. Although you are going to get waxed and as some would say “tortured”, there is no sense in returning the favor to your “waxer”. So please be kind and trim your nether region the night before. They have to do it anyway so spare them the anguish.

What to expect? Nothing much (hehe - evil!). There really is no fanfare. They heat the wax. You strip, lie down and open your legs to give easy access. The warm (it should not be so hot as to burn or sting) wax is then spread on the area where hair is to be removed. I dont believe there is a process that is taught to make decisions on which area to do first. I gathered, where there is hair, pull. So this heave-ho is done again and again. When the front part is done, you get to have your rear end treated too.

The first “sting” is usually what catches you off guard. Once you get over the “surprise” and the tingling of your skin, you will surely be able to get through the whole thing. Im not saying take my word for it, but I have been through 2 kids, years of stiletto-agony and eyebrow plucking to say that getting a brazilian is no big deal. I expected to cry and scream the first time, but aside from the few times I flinched, no tear was shed and no scream was heard. What is more painful is the part where they try to clean it out more. You should realize that not all your hair will be successfully removed by the wax. There will be some little stubble that will remain and it makes no sense to use wax on those. So you have a choice between plucking and threading. And if you have had the opportunity to try both on your eyebrows - just imagine the same but down there. Yikes! Hehe.

If youre a woman and you know how it feels to wear Janylin 3-inch stilettos the whole day, you would understand when I say that the benefits of getting a brazilian far outweighs the pain and discomfort. And that is why I go back again, and again, and again. Besides - my husband absolutely loves that I do it!
bikini_red.jpgI have wanted to write about my experience for a long time now as did not find any material or article that explained how bearable it really is. Most wrote about the pain and forgot all about the rest of it. And if you know me, you would realize that I will never encourage anyone to try something - be it product or service - that I have not tried, tested and believed in.

To all divas - grab your sharp tiny scissors and start trimming now so you can go get bald tomorrow! If you need a recommendation - try Brazilian Bare at the 5th level of Rustans Dept Store in Makati. The place isnt crowded or noisy. The staff are friendly but efficient.

    Why would I get one if I’m not about to wear string bikini? Hehe.

    So I guess I really don’t know - won’t know - how it feels. ;) Well, because I haven’t worn stilettos (I fall flat on my face with just an inch of heels, I’m not about to subject myself to a higher kind of torture hehe); or plucked my eyebrows — but I accidentally shaved them once. Haha!

    But then, who knows? I might undergo that…waxing.

    Probably when I’m a lot thinner. And have the courage AND confidence to flaunt whatever needs to be flaunt! Haha!

    @Shari
    - You dont have to be thinner to try it. You dont have to flaunt anything to get waxed - hell I dont. ;) I never used to wear bikini’s except if it pertained to underwear.

    Im not sure if youve heard the saying about feeling sexy by wearing black underwear? Maybe thats how waxing makes me (and maybe others) feel… without the string bikini. ;)

    - Well think about it. It took me a while before I had the guts too. I went from trimming to shaving to waxing… maybe in the future eh? :)

    Where exactly is Brazilian Bare located now? I remember it was a small stall in Rustan’s U, but when I got there, it’s now Debenhams. I’m from the province and I haven’t been to manila for over a year so I was surprised when Rustan’s U wasn’t where it should be. I had to go somewhere else to get waxed. I’d still like to know where Brazilian Bare is located though. Thanks!

    @hotpink
    - Brazilian Bare is located in the 5th floor of Rustans. Its a level up from where the home&living section is (think where bridal registry used to be). Its on the same level as Belo Medical and Institut Clarins.

    I should bring a recorder next time I get a brazilian. I make around 15 (or more) different screams. I prefer the clean and easy wax, next is the hot wax. I prefer the one time, big time ouch. I haven’t tried cold wax yet though.
    My first time was at Let’s Face It in SM Marilao coz it’s near my place. The person who waxed me was good. Of course, it hurt a lot but I did not give in naman to the thought of walking out.
    Second time was at Neo Spa. I suggest you look for Maria coz she does it systematically so it’s not supposed to hurt so much. Yun nga lang, the area wasn’t so clean. I mean there were a few stray hairs which she wasnt able to remove.
    I must try Brazilian Bare next =) And yes, it’s true. You better trim it first so it wouldnt hurt much. And maintain it!

    Mj - Now that’s a thought. Although, I dared not scream at Brazilian Bare because really the walls are thin. I was afraid the whole floor was going to hear me scream. So whenever I plan to go, I make sure to bring a thick hanky… for putting in my mouth. :)

    Hi girls aaand guys! ;) First I would like to thank all who have recommended BRAZILIAN BARE as their choice waxing salon. We have a new location in the Ortigas Center area for those who don’t go to Makati that often. We have added more fun and fab services so hope you can visit us soon to try it all! Either in Rustan’s Glorietta, 5th level or at our new branch in Ortigas Center. Our numbers are 634-5859 and 634-5665. Hope to see you all soon and thank you for your support! :)

    I like this post. I’ve tried Brazilian Bare and the service is very efficient. Joy, the attendant who waxed me, was very pleasant and I immediately felt at ease with her.

    It was my first time so I plugged some music in one ear and chatted with Joy to help me relax. The location in Rustan’s is excellent, the floor is not teeming with people so you’re not frazzled and hectic when you come in for your appointment.

    rach - I agree with you about Brazilian Bare. Its the reason why I keep coming back there to have mine done. I try to encourage my friends to try it too but they are still scared of the “pain”.
