Kontra agos: A Resistance Film Festival

Blogging for me has become a way to express my thoughts and feelings on a subject or topic that interests or irks me. I feel I have always been passionate about my beliefs and lived my life not compromising them.

However, I pale compared to my other siblings. They are truly talented individuals who elevate their passion to the next level. And more importantly, their passion takes them to places and encounters I only vaguely hear about and I don’t allow myself to touch. It doesn’t mean though that I am not proud of them. In fact, I am very much proud.

One of my sisters has directed several short films and documentaries. Twice, her films were chosen as finalists in the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. The other day, I received an SMS from her for an invite to a film festival in Robinson’s Galleria. Unfortunately, I just got back from my trip to Subic and have opted to take the chance to rest. To make up for missing their opening night, I am promoting the festival here.

Kontra agos: A Resistance Film Festival

celebrates films that go against the current, whether it be of popular cinema, politics or conventional ideas of love, sex and gender.

My sister’s film: UNCONVENTIONAL WARFARE (documentary co-directed with Herbert Docena)

This documentary contextualizes the issue of US military presence in the country within the long and bitter history of conflict in the south. Countering the reductionist frame set by the narrative of the “global war against terror,” it examines the historical conditions that led to the emergence of the Moro separatist movement and the subsequent rise of the Abu Sayyaf. It dissects the government’s contradictory attempts to downplay its threat while at the same time justifying escalating military operations in the region.

Against this backdrop, the documentary then probes allegations of US military involvement in the war.

You still have 3 days to catch the festival. See the schedule below.

  2. I love watching foreign indie films, but Filipino indie films are difficult to find unless it is very popular like “ang pagdadalaga ni maximo.” Thanks for posting this and the links so I can explore them further.

Then its a good thing you stopped by my site. Actually “ang pagdadalaga ni maximo” is indeed popular but not the only good film out there. That film is more commercialized than the rest and that is why more people know about it although I will not go as far as call it mainstream.

If you want you can browse through my sis’ site and maybe contact her for schedules of future events.
