Cebu Hospital Scandal

This will be short and I may write a longer post about it but I just have to say that the incident that happened at a Cebu Hospital that was videotaped and posted on Youtube is… unbelievable!

There are no words to describe the impact this video had on the people involved and to those who have watched it. it is the lowest form of ridicule to the patient and to the hospital they represent. it has made a mockery of the medical profession.

Another unbelievable thing is the lack of outburst from the blogging community… or maybe I just have not searched that deep enough through the google pages. I expected something similar (or more) to the ruckus caused by the Desperate Housewives comment about Filipino doctors or by the comment about OFWs in an article by Malu Fernandez or to the video of the teacher making love with a student.

I feel for the patient and hope in all fervor that he triumphs over the doctors and the nurses and all the other people in that room and in that hospital. They deserve to be punished to pay for what they have done.

hi, apples! i posted something about this today on my blog. this isn’t shameless self-promotion, i just wanted to share a reaction from someone who’s also a doctor. :)

it doesn’t matter that i’m also of the medical profession - the whole incident was still appalling. nakakahiya talaga.

hi dr_clairebear! I went over to your blog and read your post on this scandal. The article was in depth and well written. I appreciate the details and the input from a medical standpoint and the empathy you also showed for the patient. I do not doubt that they are very skilled doctors and nurses and skill-wise I probably cannot even make it through the first year of pre-med, but they let their human nature be witnessed. Unfortunately by millions as the video was posted on YouTube. I understand the need to record the procedure for training and learning but there was already 1 person officially filming it but you could still see several others whipping out their point and shoot or their camera phones just to capture the memory of such an unfortunate operation. I imagine they wanted to store that image and view it as an accomplishment that they were part of something that many may not at all experience. But it was unprofessional and crossed the line between being doctors and being themselves.

Even outside the medical profession, this kind of behavior is not tolerated. So this case should not be exempted. They may be someone’s doctor, nurse, parent, brother, sister or fiance… but they should not be surprised to be reprimanded or be held liable for their actions… after all, they acted on their own… without pressure or force. Too bad they were discovered… like a thief caught with his hand inside the cookie jar. I feel for their families and friend who as expected stand by them. But again, they did this and they must suffer the consequences.

Seriously stupid people to have had posted it on youtube.

It’s not like there are multiple perfume-canister-removal-operation videos that they won’t get traced and caught. Stupid.

As for the bloggers community I guess you can only count on them being news articles and small opinion pieces because the issue doesn’t directly affect bloggers. though it is a big deal publicity-wise, I guess it’s just one of those things that blow over.

    Peace.
